Books to Help You Get Started

The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramesy

The Total Money Makeover is a great tool for describing a simple and effective plan for someone to get out of debt and handle life’s financial emergency situations. This book became the most effective tool for me when I became desperate to get out of debt. Before starting the book, I read the 7-step system and said “I can’t even do step one”, then after reading how to work through step one I felt it was too simple to actually work and it would take a lifetime to complete. Desperation made me start the processes outlined, two years later all of my debt was gone; no more collection calls, no more fear to answer the phone! The outlined process for steps one and steps two are how to get out of debt, the next five are about how to build a life of financial security and have a nest egg to retire on. Yes! They all are successful if you start….

Richest Man In Babylon by George S. Clason

The Richest Man in Babylon remains a classic in financial literacy literature. Originally published in 1926 the financial principles withstand the test of time. The principles are told in story book format presented as if they are archaeological tablets of financial principles from the ancient wealthy city of Babylon. if you are already out of debt (except a mortgage) this is a great book for you. After I finished reading the book, I had no doubt the outlined wealth building principles would work, I was a little surprised how common sense the wealth building principles are.

Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter

Robert Kiyosaki should be credited with waking people up to the fact; financial retirement landscape has changed since the 1950. Up until Mr. Kiyosaki published this book, we all believed what made a person financially “rich” was a giant paycheck. If all you do is read the first few chapters of this book, you will walk away with the practical and appliable understanding that no matter how big someone’s steady paycheck is; if a person’s spending habits are even or greater than their earnings, they will always be poor.

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

Think and Grow Ritch deserves to be on the self-improvement financial book reading list, due to being one of the modern world’s early self-improvement books and the grandfather of personal financial wellness lists. I can’t think of a single personal financial improvement book published in the last 40 years that doesn’t have some part of Nepoleon Hills financial wellness book captured inside the pages. This book focuses on the different disciplines various famous wealthy people had in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There are many different mindsets outlined from the structured mathematical to the metaphysical that still apply today.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is written as a story about a young shepherd boy who has a dream about one day finding gold and riches. When he wakes, fate keeps reminding him of his dream. The boy decides he can never get close to his dreams if he keeps drifting through life never working toward those dreams. The story teaches that when someone really desires something and works toward that goal, the whole universe will work together to let you realize that dream. This book is motivational and inspires people to work towards their dreams. If you have traveled the journey of working toward your dreams, then the story of how the universe and stars coming together to help guide you will sound less like magic and more like reality. Every year I listen to the audio version, beautifully narrated by Jeremy Irons, to remind myself of my personal journey and that magic does exist.
